Why Have I Gained So Much Weight Over the Years? March 20, 2023 Alternate Text
MORE BLOGS

We are often asked “What is the biggest contributor to weight gain?”

The answer:  there are many contributing factors, and sometimes a combination of factors. Although every person is different, often the factors stem from the same place, Chronic Inflammation.

Inflammation can be a result of:  Sickness, injury, sleep deprivation, stress, poor diet, meal timing, environmental toxins, antibiotics, medications, and more. These can all impact one’s hormonal balance, quality of and ability to digest or assimilate the nutrients in foods, and even keep the nervous system in a state of calm.

Adding to this, we live in a time where food is so readily available that the most common contributing factor for weight gain is the effects of grazing or snacking on food too many times in a day. Even if it is healthy food, the result of eating a breakfast, lunch, dinner and snacking in between is something that needs to be discussed. Some people produce as many as 20 responses a day due to sipping on high calorie drinks such as sodas or coffee with additives.

It needs to be understood that every time your tastebuds sense food, an insulin response is created. When kept to a couple of strategically timed responses a day, you are on the right path! Insulin is a wonderful hormone that enables the energy from digested food to be carried throughout the body via the bloodstream, then enters the cells and tops them up with that energy.  Cortisol, known as the “stress” hormone, is another hormone that will pitch in to help regulate the blood sugar ensuring you are right where you need to be always. This is the sign of a perfectly functioning hormonal system.

When the pancreas is taxed with so many insulin responses, over time one can become insulin resistant, a function of becoming a Type 2 diabetic, and if left to its devices, the blood sugar can also lead to cortisol resistance. When this happens, more red flags will show up other than just weight gain. Other symptoms include:

  • systemic inflammation
  • arthritis/bursitis/tendinitis
  • poor memory
  • anxiety
  • inability to deal with stressful situations
  • decreased immune response

… therefore, more susceptible to

  • viruses
  • bacteria
  • parasites
  • allergies
  • asthma
